Balance as a Mom

Lisa shares her secrets on being a cross balanced mom.

Today, I wanted to talk about something near and dear to my heart. Something that is always fleeting, something we can’t get enough of, and something we wish we always had more of.

Any guesses?

Time.

And with Time, we often hear the word Balance.

I use the two together often when I’m discussing one of my favorite programs, Routine Queen, or talking about growing your goals.

As a process and efficiency expert, I’m in the business of helping women and mothers manage themselves within the confines of time.

But what if I told you balance between your roles and time was pretty much a lie?

(SHOCK! GASP! AH!)

Don’t worry, stick with me, hope isn’t lost.

Balance (n): an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.

Women are more people than ever nowadays:

Individuals

Daughters

Wives

Mothers

Business Owners

Career Women

The list goes on and on...

The roles in our life wreak havoc on our ability to balance all that we are, all that we shall become and all that we aspire to be.

And what if I told you that true balance was a lie we as mothers keep telling ourselves is achievable and realistic?

The definition of balance above cannot be accomplished.

And we are setting ourselves up for utter and complete failure. Every. Single. Day.

So what do we do?

We become cross-balanced in our roles, tasks and priorities.

I want you to throw out the notion that you will be balanced, but rather, think of yourself as a cross-balancing boss that easily transitions and flows between your values, roles and tasks.

And here’s the initial steps to get started in a cross-balanced way of thinking (we cover HOW in Routine Queen, so join Instant Access and hop on in!):

Get to the heart of what’s important

“Tell me what you want, what you really, really want…”

Or what’s important to you, rather.

While a lot of things seem important, I like all of my clients to know what’s the MOST important.

That’s why I have them determine and learn their values: the top 5 things that are most important to them.

This defines where your energy should flow so that you can grow. As a boss babe, you need to be intentional with your time, you can’t do it all, you can’t balance it all, all the time, so we need to determine what’s most important first so that we can tackle that first.

Remember: What’s first comes first.

Here’s my Top 5 Values. I help you determine, define and live them within Routine Queen.

  1. Health
  2. Family
  3. Meaningful Work
  4. Safety / Comfort
  5. Education

Step 1: What’s most important to you?

Define your roles within your values

Now you know what’s important to you, we then determine your roles within your values.

If one value is health, is it for you as an individual maintaining a healthy weight and maybe also as a mother through providing a healthy, active lifestyle for your kids (individual and mother)?

If family is a value, are you giving each member in your family quality time daily (wife and mother)?

If meaningful work is important, are you showing up for your communities, customers or clients on a consistent basis? What value are you providing to them (business owner)?

Knowing what’s important to you is a priority so you can determine who you are in those roles, making it easier to know the RIGHT tasks to complete on a daily basis.

As a business owner, this also helps you learn WHO you are speaking to because that is just as important (more important actually) than WHAT you sell.

Step 2: Who are you in what’s most important?

Assign tasks to those roles

This is where real action comes in.

After you determine your values and roles, then you assign your daily or weekly (if not done daily) tasks.

Action is what helps fuel alignment of your values with your to-do’s.

Are you noticing extreme lack of balance within your values? It’s time to put more energy more evenly throughout.

Here’s what I do daily in regards to my values, roles and tasks:

Health / Individual & Mother / 30 minutes of activity daily & stretching with the girls before bed

Family / Wife & Mother / 30 minutes with each member of my family daily

Meaningful Work / Individual & Business Owner / Write for 30 minutes daily & go Live daily

Safety & Comfort / Individual & Wife & Mother & Housekeeper / Transitional tidy between tasks & 10-minute tidy before bed

Education / Individual & Business Owner / Read for 20 minutes daily

A lot of these fulfill multiple values, roles and tasks. That’s cross-balance, my friend!

It seems like a lot, but I promise it’s all achievable when you learn what are the right things to do and when to do them. But that’s another conversation for another time (and also what we cover in Routine Queen).

Remember: If it’s not important, you probably can delegate it and/or not do it.

Step 3: What do you need to do to fulfill your roles and values?

Once you get your values in order, it will have you twirling 24/7.
